Kevin Abstract: Artist Of The Month

Kevin Abstract: Artist Of The Month | YANOS

For October 2019’s instalment of YANOS Artist Of The Month, we have awarded the title to Kevin Abstract. The Texas rapper and singer, who is also a founding member of rap collective BROCKHAMPTON, is more than deserving of this title having gone from strength to strength over the last few years.

Abstract, whose real name is Clifford Ian Simpson, brings an alternative and unique twist to a hip-hop and R&B inspired sound. His lyrics are sincere and emotional, often making note of his sexuality and race, and the stigma or prejudice surrounding this.

Abstract’s debut album, MTV1987, was released 1 day before his 18th birthday on July 15th 2014. Abstract has since gone on to release 2 further albums, American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story and Viceland in 2016, and Arizona Baby earlier this year (2019).

Kevin Abstract’s most recent album, Arizona Baby was well-received, with the likes of NME, Pitchfork and Highsnobiety all rating the album highly. Some of our favourite Kevin Abstract songs here at YANOS include: Joyride, Empty, Miserable America and Peach.

In April of this year (2019), Abstract announced that once he has released as much music as he can in 2019, he would like to retire and focus on filmmaking. Abstract has already written, produced and starred-in various TV Series, Mini-series and Shorts.
